Purchasing Home Security Camera Systems

There are several parts included in home security camera systems. Anyone looking to install any type of security camera in their home or around their property may want to consider this option if they are just starting out, or if they want to be sure they get all the needed components. Home security camera systems take the guesswork out of installing cameras - and in making sure they're going to work properly.

DVR

For those who don't yet know, DVR stands for Digital Video Records. These machines have replaced VCRs as they record on DVDs rather than videotapes. If you're looking for home security camera systems that actually tape the video they pick up, you need some type of DVR. Most DVRs have at least four channels, meaning they can handle four cameras at once. Some have up to eight channels. If you're looking for home security camera systems with more than one camera, make sure your DVR has enough channels to support the number of cameras you're getting. Your retail store can help you choose the right model.

Cameras

There are many different types of cameras available with your home security camera systems. Most homeowners opt for the bullet style, which cuts down on glare and allows for a wider angle of the lens. Of course there are dome style cameras which mount on a ceiling, but these are rarely used in homes.

Cable

You'll need enough cable to run from your cameras to your DVR. Most home security camera systems come with an adequate amount of cable, but you can also purchase more for cameras that you want to mount further away.

Monitors

You can of course just record from your cameras and play it back on your television, but most prefer a separate monitor to watch their video as its being recorded. Home security camera systems usually come with a monitor included, but of course you can purchase others if you want. They are usually as big as a computer screen so that they can be easily placed wherever you want to watch your video feed.

When purchasing a home security camera system to watch the video feed over a website, you may not need any additional monitors as you can log in right from your computer.

Building Your Own System

Many stores that sell home security camera systems allow you to build your own system by picking and choosing the cameras, monitors, and DVRs that you want. They can usually recommend the amount of cable you'll need, the power supply and any accessories you may be interested in. You may want some extra wall brackets and mounts, or need some additional lengths of cable. They'll let you know just what you need to do to plan and configure your own home security camera system, how many cameras you'll need, and so on.

And of course by planning your own system, you can be sure that you'll be sticking to your budget and not getting unnecessary items or upgrades.

Some Tips for Purchasing a Home Security Camera

Many people these days are installing a home security camera at various vantage points around their home and property. These can be used for either indoor or outdoor applications, to keep an eye on anyone approaching your home and anyone that's already inside your home. A home security camera can scare away potential intruders, find out who has been stealing your mail, keep an eye on your babysitter or full-time housekeeper, and let you check in on your kids while you're still at the office.

If you're looking for a home security camera to protect your property and make potential intruders think twice about breaking in, you'll want one that is weatherproof and that works at night. Most now are made in bullet style; the rounded design cuts down on glare and allows for a much better picture reception and wider angle in the same size of camera. They also usually come with a visor to do the same. All you need to install this type of home security camera is cable, a VCR or DVR to run the cable to, and adapters. Most cameras of course come with the cable and adapters and the necessary hardware to mount them to the wall. If you have a VCR or DVR at home that you want to use, be sure that the Of course you need to provide your own screwdriver.

For those who want more than just a basic home security camera, you can purchase an entire kit or package. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can get a basic kit that includes a camera, monitor, and VCR or DVR. Some will include more than just one home security camera; sometimes up to eight. For most homeowners, this will be more cameras than you need, but sometimes getting more than one is a good idea too.

These packages can be a great idea for those who have no idea how to get started with a home security camera system, or who want to be sure that they can hook up more than one camera to their monitor and taping system. Most monitors in these systems will show split screens with each camera, just like you see at stores, banks, and other such places.

Another type of popular home security camera is one that broadcasts the signal to an internet site so that you can log on and watch from anyplace with an internet connection. This is very handy for those who want to check in on the kids, the nanny, or just their home and property when they're at the office or on the road. And of course there is what's called spy-size home security cameras that are very small and that can be hidden behind virtually anything in the home.

If you're not sure what type of home security camera is right for you, don't hesitate to talk to the sales staff at your retail store, or contact them online. Usually they're very knowledgeable about the products and can make personal recommendations.

Installing Home Security Cameras

There are really two different types of home security cameras that any homeowner would consider today, and they are the ones that record to a regular VHS tape or DVD, and the ones that show live pictures on an internet site. If you're considering home security cameras for your own home, which should you choose?

The answer to that question is of course going to be different for every homeowner, and really boils down to just why you want home security cameras in the first place. Some may immediately say that this is an easy question - you want them for security. But ask yourself, security from what? Potential burglars when you're away or during the night? Or are you concerned with activities that may be going on in the home when the kids are there, when you have household help present, and so on? Having home security cameras installed that record to a VCR or DVR may be a good idea for typical security scenarios, such as wanting to scare away burglars. A potential thief may see the camera and be motivated to leave or move to a different target.

Home security cameras that record to a tape are also good if you suspect theft from persons like the cleaning company, contractors, the nanny, and so on. You can record and then view the tapes at your leisure, and also have evidence you can present to the person or to the police.

But for some families, a parent may want to protect their children or an elderly relative who may be home alone, or keep a watchful eye on them. For example, you may suspect that your child has friend over after school when you've told him or her that this wasn't allowed. By having home security cameras that broadcast over a website, you are able to log on and view what's happening in your house at any given time. If you see your child having friends over or doing anything else, you can simply call home and deal with the situation. In cases like these, you may not be concerned with having home security cameras that actually record events to be played back later, but just need something that will let you be in two places at once, so to speak.

Of course there are some precautions needed about installing home security cameras. If you have someone working for you such as a nanny or full-time housekeeper, this person could be considered an employee and it would be illegal to tape them in certain circumstances, such as the bathroom or their private bedroom. You may also want to let people, including your children, know that you're installing home security cameras so that they don't get caught doing something embarrassing, or they begin to think that you don't trust them. But if you install just one or two home security cameras outside your main entrances to scare off potential intruders, this can actually go a long way toward protecting your home and your family.
