Home Security Products, Systems, and Avoiding Mistakes
The Number One Mistake With a Home Security System Many people today are turning to a home security system to protect themselves, their family, and their belongings. The right alarm system, couples with some good spotlights and common sense changes to your property can go a long way toward scaring off any would-be intruders. When a thief sees the keypad of the home security system, he's more likely to move to the next target; even if you have some nice things inside your home, why risk it when someone down the street or a few blocks over has the same home electronics that you do but without any type of home security system protecting it? There are no end to the gadgets and accessories that you can add. Surveillance cameras abound and are now commonly found around residential homes and yards; this means both inside and out. Spy cameras are also becoming more affordable and easier to install, while their pictures are actually becoming crisper and clearer as well. Whatever you want to accomplish with your home security system, there's likely to be a piece of equipment or gadget for you. Whether it's to find out whose been stealing your mail from your mailbox or to keep an eye on the nanny while you're away, there's a component for you. But do you know the number one mistake most homeowners make with their home security systems? You'd be surprised at what it is; most people are. It has nothing to do with the installation or setup. Most these days feel that it's worth paying a professional to do the installation for them; with many systems, the installation is included or is just a few dollars more. Rather than trying to mess with the wiring or electrical or programming of their home security system, homeowners would rather than the installer come in and get it running for them; this can be a wise choice if you're not familiar with electronics. No, the number one mistake many people make with their home security system is not using it. They oftentimes forget to set the alarm before going to bed or when going out. Sometimes it's just forgetfulness; you're not used to doing this when you're rushing out to work in the morning or when you're exhausted at the end of the day, so the home security system is the last thing on your mind. But there is another reason why many neglect using it, and that's because they're afraid of setting it off accidentally. Like the smoke detector that sounds just because you're cooking bacon, homeowners are afraid of doing something wrong or negligent and causing the home security system to sound for no reason. They fear the embarrassment that would cause with neighbors and police. A home security system is much like a seatbelt in the car; it will only protect you if you use it. While false alarms or user error does sometimes happen, it's usually very rare. So don't let fear keep you from using your own home security system. Pick and Choose Your Home Security Products! There's a good reason as to why you should have your chosen home security products in mind before you start shopping, and that's because there really is no end to the number of products and gadgets you can purchase. If you have an unlimited budget and an understanding spouse, then by all means, go for it. But for most people, being in a home security products store can be like a kid in a candy store - your eyes get big, you start drooling, and then next thing you know you walk out of there with far too many things you don't need. To keep you from making that mistake, here is a basic list of the most commonly chosen home security products on the market and their use. Alarms An alarm system is pretty straightforward; you hook it up to doors and windows and then it either uses a wire or a wireless signal that connects to the keypad. When the alarm is activated, anything that breaks that signal causes the alarm to be tripped. Some persons on a limited budget or who live in apartments where they can't install this type of home security product still have many options open to them. Standalone alarms come in a variety of models. For example, there are some that you attach to a door or window and which use a signal between two pieces. If that signal is broken by someone opening the window or door, an alarm is sounded. There is also another type called a doorstop alarm; this looks something like a regular doorstop with a little "tongue" that slide partway under the door, with an alarm mechanism behind it. If the door is opened just a little bit, it will hit that alarm mechanism and cause it to be sounded. These types of small, inexpensive home security products are great options for those who don't want to invest a lot of money or who may be intimated by complete alarm systems. Cameras Closed circuit cameras are fast becoming very commonly used home security products, as they are becoming more and more affordable. They are easy to install and can be wired or send a wireless signal to virtually any VCR or DVR, or can send a signal to an internet address so that you can log on and view the live feed. Anyone interested in keeping an eye on their home when they're not away will appreciate this type of home security product, especially if you have children or elderly relatives that are home while you're at work and need that extra monitoring. Some have even found that fake cameras work great as home security products. They come with a wire and a little red light that makes them look very real. Of course, they're not as good as a real alarm as they serve little purpose if someone does actually break in, but can still be a deterrent to any would-be thief. So Many Home Security Systems! These days, advertisements for home security systems are everywhere, and chances are that virtually everyone knows the names Brinks, ADT, and Guardian. These companies of course no doubt started by offering corporations and businesses alarm systems, but soon found a wide open market for home security systems, since so many homeowners and residents have felt the need to add some extra protection to their home other than just a good deadbolt on the door. If you personally are looking into home security systems, what are some things you should be keeping in mind for your selection? How do you know which one is the best for you, and what features you need versus which ones are just a waste of money? Obviously the answer will be different for everyone, but let's take a closer look at how home security systems operate and what they offer, and then maybe you can make the best decision for you and your family. First of all, really think about your own security needs and why you're contemplating these home security systems. Do you have reason to suspect that someone is stealing from you on a regular basis, or have you already been the victim of vandalism? Do you just want something basic that will deter a would-be burglar or thief? Or do you have children and family members that are home during the day and that may need assistance at the touch of a button? By really assessing the things you need as a family, you can be better able to pick and choose through the available home security systems that are out there, and decide which features are best. If you have reason to suspect that someone is stealing from you, perhaps a housekeeper or contractor or neighbor, you would choose the home security systems that include closed circuit cameras so that you can catch this person in the act. You might also consider this if you suspect abuse on the part of your child's babysitter or the person that takes care of an elderly relative in your home. These types of home security systems are hooked up through a wire or send a wireless signal to a VCR or DVR, and this way you have a videotape or DVD that you can present to the police or in court. For those who just want a basic model that will scare away intruders or that can summon the police or emergency medical services at the touch of a button, there are alarm home security systems that can do both. The basic models have receivers hooked to doors and windows and set off the sound of the alarm if these are opened when the alarm is set. Monitored alarm home security systems are those that send a signal to a company that is monitoring your alarm on their computer system. If the alarm is tripped, they immediately call you, the police, and emergency services. This usually only cost a small monthly fee after they are installed.
